Changes to Vehicle Tax

Welcome to our regular Employee Newsletter.

Did you know that from 1st October 2014 the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed in a vehicle.

In a recent survey carried out by the RAC and involving 2,000 drivers, 36% said they were not aware of the scrapping of the paper tax disc, whilst 47% said they didn’t know when the changes were due to take effect.

The current method of displaying something in the vehicle itself is now seen as outdated, with the police and other official agencies being able to log on to the DVLA’s electronic system to check if tax is paid and up to date
on a vehicle.

With all of that in mind, we thought it might be useful to tell you about these new changes, which at one time or another will affect most of us.

From 1st October 2014 it will no longer be necessary to display a tax disc in the windscreen of your vehicle. The tax will still be payable though and the DVLA will send out a reminder when any current vehicle tax is due to expire.

From 1st November 2014 it will be possible to pay by monthly direct debit for vehicle tax.

Selling a Vehicle

If you sell your vehicle to the motor trade you should immediately tell the DVLA who will automatically issue you with a refund for any full months tax remaining. Currently you have to make a written application for any refund.

You should also tell the DVLA if your vehicle is scrapped or taken off the road or exported so that they can refund you any tax owing.

Buying a Used Vehicle

If you buy a used vehicle after 1st October 2014, you will need to tax it yourself, rather than relying on receiving the benefit of any tax already paid by the seller and you won’t be able to drive the vehicle until that tax has been paid. This can be done easily and quickly by completing the “New keeper “section of the log book or vehicle registration certificate. Again, you can also do it on line, over the phone or at the post office.

If ever you want to check to see if vehicle tax has been paid on any vehicle, you can now do so easily on line by visiting www.gov.uk and typing in the vehicle registration number and vehicle make.
